Federal Skilled Worker Class

Skilled workers are selected as permanent residents based on their education, work experience, knowledge of English and/or French, and other criteria that have been shown to help them become economically established in Canada.


The application process includes a points system analysis and meeting mandatory requirements.


Federal skilled worker applications are assessed for eligibility according to the criteria set out below

 

For your application to be eligible for processing, you must:include the results of your official language proficiency test, AND have a valid offer of arranged employment, OR have one year of continuous full-time paid work experience in at least one of the occupations listed here OR since November 5th  2011 be an international student enrolled in a PhD program in Canada (or graduated from a Canadian PhD program within the past 12 months) and meet certain criteria.


New changes from July 1st 2011
  • If you are applying under one of the 29 eligible occupations, as of July 1, 2011, a maximum of 10,000 Federal Skilled Worker applications will be considered for processing in the following 12 months. Within the 10,000 cap, a maximum of 500 federal skilled worker applications per eligible occupation will be considered for processing each year.
    These limits do not apply to applications with an offer of arranged employment.

The cap has been reached. CIC has received 10,000 complete Federal Skilled Worker applications for processing since July 1, 2011.

 

If new Ministerial Instructions are not issued before July 1, 2012, the current cap of 10,000 new applications will re-set on that date.

 

Skilled worker with at least one year full-time (or equivalent ) paid work experience in last ten years are also eligible for Canadian immigration if their occupation is listed under the NOC shortage occupation list. Currently listed occupations are:-

29 OCCUPATIONS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR FEDERAL SKILLED WORKER CATEGORY 


These occupations are all Skill Type 0 (managerial occupations) or Skill Level A (professional occupations) or B (technical occupations and skilled trades) on the Canadian National Occupational Classification list.

Points System 

 

In addition to above eligibility criteria, skilled workers  also need to obtain minimum 67 points of the basis of :- 

 

  • Education 
  • Abilities in English and French languages 
  • Work experience 
  • Age 
  • Arranged employment 
  • Adaptability 

 

Mandatory Requirements 

 

Eligible applicants also need to:-  

  • Demonstrate proof of enough money to support himself and dependents after arriving in Canada. 
  • Pass medical examination. 
  • Pass security and criminal checks. 
  • Mandatory language tests are required for all skilled worker applications. Citizenship and Immigration Canada now only accepts designated third-party language tests as proof of language ability.

EFFECTIVE December 23, 2010: If you are submitting a language test with your application, the results are now valid for 2 years from the time you took the test, instead of 1 year. This change applies to Federal skilled worker, Canadian Experience Class and Business Class Immigrants (investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed people).
